Slightly different from most hexagram DaXiang sentence structure, this hexagram, Jie ䷧, uses three Chinese words instead four words to describe the natural phenomenon that best represents the hexagram. As with the previous hexagram, Yu, instead of characterizing the structure of the upper and lower trigrams as we have typically found, this sentence focuses on the actions of the trigrams. Let’s explore this.
The first word, Lei 雷 (thunder), is the symbolic meaning of Jie’s top trigram, Zhen 震 ☳. The second word, Yu 雨, means rain, which is the symbolic image of the bottom trigram, Kan 坎 ☵. In most cases, we see the word Shui 水, water, to depict the trigram Kan. Yu/rain was applied in this hexagram to emphasize the meaning of water coming from the sky. The third word Zuo 作, means work, compose, write, act, perform, rise, or act. Together, these three words describe the natural phenomenon of hexagram ䷧, thundering and raining, which is a typical Daoist metaphor for creating new life or generating new life energy.
